Using just threads, one can create fabrics, decorative items, kids’ clothing, and even personalized albums. Crochet is an art form that allows countless patterns and designs to be crafted through various stitching techniques. Though its roots go back centuries, it gained widespread popularity in the 18th century. With love, dedication, and precision, it enables the creation of handmade products that are both beautiful and comfortable. What began as a heartfelt hobby has now evolved into a trusted creative venture named Crochet Hook, founded by Shifa.
Shifa, from Kozhikode, experienced a major turning point in her life in 2014 during her pregnancy. As an expectant mother, she began creating tiny clothes, booties, and hairbands with her own hands for her future daughter. These first handmade gifts, crafted with love, quickly won the hearts of her family and friends.
The beautiful creations made by Shifa started gaining attention after she began sharing photos on Facebook. Within a few days, bulk orders started pouring in from shops. That’s when Shifa realized — this could grow into something much bigger.
In 2018, to reach a wider audience, Shifa began organizing expos in the Calicut and Malappuram districts. In 2025, she also conducted expos at Lulu Mall as part of Women’s Day celebrations. Initially, she held offline workshops, but during the pandemic, she shifted them online. Today, over 1,200 students have learned the art of crochet through Shifa’s business, Crochet Hook.
Every month, more than 30 new students join her courses across categories like Basic, Advanced, and Toy Making. Shifa personally provides the required materials for learning. Bulk orders now come not only from within India but also from countries like Sri Lanka, Dubai, and Qatar. Over the 11-year journey, Shifa has built a team of 6 women who fulfill orders from their homes.
Shifa understands that crochet is a slow, patient art. One of the key features of her products is that they are made using 100% cotton thread, ensuring comfort for children. She travels to various parts of Kerala and India to source high-quality materials directly.
Managing a business from home while handling household responsibilities has been a major challenge for Shifa. However, her family’s support — especially the technical help from her husband — has been a great motivation. Her husband built the business’s website, Facebook page, and helped set up the digital side of the venture.
In the beginning, many people asked Shifa, “Is this really a business? Who’s going to buy these things?” But today, those same people ask her, “Can you teach us too?” This inspiring journey began when Shifa bought her first crochet hook set online for ₹490. From there, she learned how to make online learning effective. Her first offline batch had 25 students — far more than she expected.
Although she was initially nervous about teaching online, she overcame that fear and today, has built a thriving crochet community both within India and abroad. With her belief that “time and patience lead to great success,” Shifa’s story is a powerful inspiration — a story of turning a personal passion into a purpose-driven business.
