Some journeys begin with a business plan, while others begin with pure passion. Smitha Sunil’s entrepreneurial story is one such inspiring journey—one where creativity, patience, and determination transformed a childhood love for art into a promising handmade jewelry brand called Aabharana.
Originally from Vaikom, Kerala, and currently residing in Navi Mumbai after marriage, Smitha has always believed that the strongest foundation behind her entrepreneurial journey has been her passion for art and the unwavering support of her family. Her husband Sunil, son Pranav Sunil, and daughter Parvathy have been her pillars of strength throughout this journey. Pranav, a software engineer, played a significant role by designing the official website for Aabharana, while Parvathy, currently pursuing her studies as a Physician Associate student, became an early inspiration and support system in the creative process. Alongside them, Smitha’s parents and brother back home continue to motivate and encourage her at every stage.

Academically, Smitha completed her B.Sc. in Chemistry, but life had different plans waiting for her. Once her children became independent and self-sufficient, she found herself with the time and opportunity to revisit a long-held passion—art and crafts.
Since childhood, Smitha had a deep love for creativity. She explored embroidery, fabric painting, bio-jewelry, silk thread jewelry, and quilling jewelry. Yet among all forms of artistic expression, Terracotta art held a special place in her heart. The magic of transforming a simple block of clay into beautiful jewelry fascinated her deeply. Designing new patterns and experimenting with colors became more than a hobby—it became a creative language through which she expressed herself.
Her entrepreneurial journey began unexpectedly. Initially, she started making Terracotta jewelry simply as a hobby for herself. Friends and relatives admired her creations and encouraged her with positive feedback. Soon, an opportunity arose when her daughter Parvathy’s classical dance group needed jewelry in bulk. Smitha first created designs on paper and later transformed them into Terracotta dance jewelry.
That experience changed everything.
She realized that her passion had the potential to become something much bigger—a meaningful business venture. With that realization, she founded Aabharana, a handmade Terracotta jewelry and handcrafted products brand.
Like every entrepreneurial journey, success did not come without challenges.
Terracotta jewelry creation is a detailed process involving multiple stages—design sketching, clay preparation, model shaping, drying, firing, and coloring with finishing. During her early days, the lack of guidance and technical knowledge resulted in losses of both time and materials. Products often cracked during production and firing stages, raw materials were difficult to source, and marketing strategies were unfamiliar territory. Delayed deliveries and financial setbacks tested her patience and determination.
But instead of giving up, Smitha chose to learn.
She discovered that patience is the biggest success mantra in this field. Over time, she built relationships with trusted suppliers and mentors who guided her through technical challenges. Every mistake became a lesson, teaching her how to refine designs, improve product quality, and maintain stronger customer relationships.
Today, one of Smitha’s greatest achievements is seeing Aabharana grow into a brand with numerous happy and satisfied customers. Recognition and appreciation for her hard work continue to motivate her and give her immense joy.
What makes Aabharana unique is its commitment to authenticity and quality. Every product is 100% eco-friendly, made using natural materials, high-quality clay, and organic paints. Since each piece is handmade, every design carries its own uniqueness and personality. Customization according to customer preferences and versatile collections suitable for both traditional and casual wear have become defining features of the brand.
Yet Smitha’s dreams extend beyond the present.
She envisions taking *Aabharana* beyond India into international markets. She plans to expand the brand by introducing trending handmade products such as artificial jasmine garlands, Kanakambaram flower accessories, and other handcrafted floral creations.
More importantly, she dreams of empowering other women by conducting workshops and helping aspiring creators become financially independent through skill development.
Smitha Sunil’s story is a reminder that success doesn’t always begin with a grand strategy—it often begins with a simple passion nurtured with patience and perseverance.
From molding clay into jewelry to shaping dreams into reality, she continues proving that creativity, when combined with determination, can transform not just art—but lives.
