Martial arts is a discipline that not only serves as a self-defense mechanism but also as an excellent form of physical exercise, helping improve focus and mental strength. It is a blend of self-protection and self-discipline, a practice that has evolved over centuries across various cultural backgrounds around the world.
From a young age, Praveen was fascinated by martial arts. Inspired by Chinese action films and their extraordinary stunts, his admiration for the art form continued to grow. That passion eventually led him to an international martial arts academy.
Initially, Praveen’s family opposed his interest in learning martial arts. But his desire was strong, and he began by learning Kung Fu. While pursuing his degree, his dream also grew, and eventually took him to the renowned Shaolin Temple in China. At the temple, he became the first South Indian and youngest Indian to receive the 34th Generation Discipleship, a turning point in his journey.
Praveen didn’t limit himself to Kung Fu — he studied various martial art forms from different parts of India and combined his skills and experience to create a refined, comprehensive martial arts model.
His belief that children in his hometown also deserve such opportunities led to the founding of Bodhidharma International Martial Arts Academy (IMA). It is not just a fitness class or an ordinary center — Praveen envisioned it as a school for martial arts, providing structured, syllabus-based training.
Initially, the academy started with classes held on rooftops and open grounds, which helped him keep investment costs low. Eventually, he acquired ISO certification and registered the academy as a Private Limited company, bringing in professionalism and official recognition. Today, the academy operates in three branches across Thiruvananthapuram — Attingal, Pothencode, and Kazhakoottam — and provides training and support to other academies in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra.
The primary mission of the academy is to deliver quality training. The training is syllabus-based, led by qualified instructors, and conducted in a safe, internationally standardized environment with proper mats, equipment, and flooring. Praveen believes martial arts isn’t just about exercise or fitness — it’s a complete way of life.
The academy offers a range of disciplines, including Kung Fu, Boxing, Kickboxing, MMA, Wushu, Kalaripayattu, and Yoga. Students are encouraged to choose the art form that suits them best. Praveen insists that all his trainers must be trained professionals, and he ensures that they receive a stable salary and job security.
While there are many martial arts academies today, Praveen raises an important question — are they genuine? Are the trainers qualified? Is there a proper syllabus? These are the points that set IMA apart, helping it grow into a trusted brand.
His next goal is to expand IMA branches to more states across India. According to Praveen, martial arts is a discipline handed down from one generation to another. It’s vital that the value and purity of this art are preserved and passed on to the next generation with integrity and commitment.
